You say tomato I say tomato.

Part of being a designer is being able to interpret your client’s ideas and then use your skills to turn those into visual reality. However, there are sometimes obstacles that need to be cleared away before both you and the client can be on the same page.

For instance, you may have a client tell you that they want their design to be “edgy” (or “cutting edge”). Besides everyone having their own personal definition of what they believe to be cutting edge, “edgy” might mean one thing to a corporate client and something totally different to a rock band.

I like to personally talk to the client upfront to learn about their project and ask them specific questions about style that will help me determine what they are going for. I also have them fill out one of our client creative briefs which helps to get us going in the right direction. And if I hear any questionable terms such as edgy, flashy, sizzle, hip or any others I make sure to find out exactly what that means to that particular client (preferably with other visual examples).
