How to Overcome a Creative Block
January 13th, 2007As a designer, one thing I’m called upon to do on a daily basis is create. But even the best of us have our off days when ideas are just not flowing for one reason or another. These are the days where you sit staring at the screen for an hour and everything you seem to do just doesn’t seem right.
So what do you do when this happens? Most of us have developed our own inspirations over the years to get us out of this sort of design rut. Here’s my own top 3 ways to combat the lack of creative juice.
1. Take a break. This is the number one thing because more often than not, this can be a major problem solver. Maybe you take a walk outside, have your lunch, go shopping, whatever, but it seems to move creative blocks pretty well.
2. Seek out inspiration. Try browsing through design magazines or the internet and maybe something you see might spark an idea.
3. Get a group involved. Grab your co-workers and explain the current block, then see if the entire group can come up with something inspiring.

I totally agree, I am having this problem right now and hence found your blog trying to seek an answer!
The next step for me is to figure out what to do when none of those first three steps work!!! I think sometimes as a designer you can just get “designed out”!
Lucky for me the weekend is only 1hr away, hopefully I will be fresh and ready to tackle my project again with new inspiration monday morning!
