
Design is not a profession where a degree or certification is required. While this is not necessarily a bad thing in a creative field, it does completely open it up and one person calling themselves a professional designer might actually be someone with very little experience, talent or knowledge about design and working with clients. continue reading


Recently, while watching one of my favorite HGTV shows, “Holmes on Homes” I had a mini revelation. Mike Holmes is a Canadian contractor and an expert in his field. The premise of the show is that folks will call on Mike to, “Make It right” – that is, they had hired a company or individual to do a home improvement or remodel project and they didn’t do a great job. In fact, they sometimes do such a horrible job that Mike and his crew basically have to gut a house and start from scratch. continue reading


I must say the way Flash has been treated in the design world lately makes it seem like a bit of an “f-bomb”. People have shunned it and treated it like it really has no purpose anymore other than to shock. Designers everywhere are jumping on the no-flash bandwagon.

None of the designers who created these covers had the luxury of Photoshop or digital photography. I’m sure a massive amount of hours went into just taking the pictures let alone doing the layouts. I would hazard to guess that many designers now take for granted the “instant gratification” factor we have now. The first question you should ask yourself about website forms is ...
Do you really NEED one on your website?
When considering a form on your site you must consider your target audience and what the purpose of that form will be. Is it a simple, one field newsletter sign up? Is it to gain more information from a customer so that you can quote a service to them? Are you putting a form up instead of your actual contact information? There are many different reasons for a form, but just in the 3 examples above, 2 have a purpose and one does not. If you are wanting to put up a contact form instead of (or even in addition to) your actual email, phone number or address, try to reconsider.
A form requires more of your viewer. In a medium (the web) that has already diminished user attention spans to next to nothing, every moment counts. If you've actually gotten a viewer interested enough in wanting to contact you, giving them a web form to fill out is actually making them take extra steps to reach you.
